Special needs provision form – Digital Grades and Diplomas
We require evidence of need for any adjustments which could potentially give an unfair advantage to candidates, or which alter content of the exam. Please refer to the table below to see which adjustments supporting evidence is required for.
Evidence should be from a qualified medical or educational professional and should demonstrate how the candidate’s condition may affect access to the exam in question. Trinity reserves the right to reject requests for adjustments if sufficient information is not provided.

See below for details of some of the adjustments available for candidates with special needs and disabilities. This information is not exhaustive, and we strive to respond to candidates’ individual needs where possible. For requirements not listed please contact music-csn@trinitycollege.co.uk to discuss your needs.
Sometimes it is useful for the examiner to be briefed about a candidate’s condition so that they have awareness of this when writing the report, even if no specific adjustments are needed. Assessment standards and criteria remain the same for all candidates in accordance with Ofqual’s regulated qualifications framework. Please note that additional marks cannot be awarded based on a candidate’s disability.
Candidates may extend the overall recording time of their exam, allowing extra time between items. This gives candidates an opportunity to compose and settle themselves between pieces, songs and technical work. Extensions should usually be no longer than 5 minutes total, but this may be increased in certain circumstances – if applying for longer than 5 minutes, please outline the length of extension requested and why this is needed in your application.
Examiners will assess from just a few seconds before the start, to just after the end of each piece, song, or section of the exam.
During the additional time allowed, candidates may choose to move out of shot or away from the camera, or have the camera turned away from them. Whilst this additional time may be used to, for example, adjust position or clean the instrument, this should not extend to any substantial practice or preparation of the next item.
In addition, candidates may also receive assistance from an adult or carer, if needed, to inform the candidate that they can take a short break, or move away from the camera, and recall them when it is time for them to begin the next item. A reminder of the next item to be performed may be given.
It is important that the video recording is continuous from the beginning to the end of the exam and is not paused or stopped in between items. This is a requirement which enables effective and robust application of the assessment criteria against the regulated learning outcomes.
Candidates who require it, may keep the scale manual within eyesight for reference only if they have particular problems e.g. recalling patterns. Please note, this may only be used as a prompt to glance at for reference before playing. Over-reliance on the prompt (e.g. spending too long studying it before starting or referring back to it during the playing) may result in a referral.
Candidates may use scores in modified formats (e.g. large print) for their chosen pieces. It is the responsibility of the candidate to provide their own modified pieces. Please note that copies of the original music must be shown to the camera if these are Trinity publications. Copies should also be uploaded along with the exam submission if these are items not included in Trinity's published books.
